Vote Walter Smith

Walter Smith

Thank you for visiting my website. I am the Democratic nominee running for North Carolina Agriculture & Consumer Services Commissioner. I will be a full time commissioner and a strong voice for agriculture, agribusiness and consumer safety. Hard work, good preparation, and a large dose of common sense can solve most problems. There are a many challenges facing the agricultural community today and the decisions we make now will no doubt determine our future.  We have to recognize in advance what the critical issues are and be prepared to meet them head-on. We need to be proactive and not reactive, something that is not always easy to accomplish in government. I believe that we must always look forward and be prepared for the issues before they become major problems.

I have been involved in agriculture my entire life. I grew up on a tobacco, row crop, and livestock farm in eastern North Carolina and currently own and operate a poultry farm in Yadkin County. I taught high school agriculture and spent over 30 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency, assisting farmers and administering federal farm programs. I was also Mayor of Boonville, a position that allowed me to sharpen my constituent-services skills. I have a unique knowledge of agriculture and government that will be a great asset in the position of North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture.

I'm going to say something that you won't hear from most people seeking your vote: "I DO NOT have all the answers." No one does, despite what the voices in the radio and  TV ads want you to think. However, I will promise to work hard to find the answers using all of the resources available to the Department. I also believe you, the taxpayer, might just have the answer yourself and when I'm elected I will encourage you to contact me with all of your concerns and ideas.  Together we will build a new day in agriculture for North Carolina.  Thank you.
